TheLuckyAlien reached out and touched his shoulder. “We’re safe,” he said. “For now.” But even as he said it, the radar blipped. Three ships, emerging from behind a nearby moon. The pirates had found them again. “What now?” Lyra asked. TheLuckyAlien looked at the weapon, then at the stars ahead. There was only one path left. “We run,” he said. “And we don’t stop until we reach Earth.” He set the course, and the garden ship surged forward, the stars blurring into streaks of light. Behind them, the pirate ships gave chase, their engines burning bright in the darkness. The race for home had begun. 234
