As he guided the ship toward the atmosphere, a new signal flickered on the communications panel—a familiar frequency, human, a call from the observatory where his journey had begun. He smiled and pressed the transmit button. 109 “This is TheLuckyAlien of the Stardrift,” he said, his voice cracking. “I’m coming home. And I’m not alone.” The crackle of static was followed by a voice, astonished and joyful. TheLuckyAlien listened, feeling the warmth of connection, of belonging. Beside him, Lyra rested her head on his shoulder. The stars wheeled past, and the Earth grew larger, welcoming them back to the fragile, beautiful present. 110
