…“Come,” the being said. “There is much to see. And little time.” Aris looked back at the Stardrift, sitting silent in the rust. He thought of Earth, of Evelyn, of the life he had left behind. Then he turned and followed the being into the structure, into a darkness that hummed with light. The hatch of the Stardrift remained open. The pulse from the structure continued, a steady rhythm now, like a cosmic heart. And somewhere, far away, a signal was received. A signal that would bring another traveler to this place—one who had been watching Aris from the beginning. The Friend, cloaked in shadow, smiled. “He is ready,” it whispered into the void. “Now the real journey begins.” 12
