…asked it to be. One of the larger ones turned its lantern head toward the Stardrift as it slid past. It raised a jointed arm in what could only be a wave. Then the planet fell away behind them, and the dark closed in again, a little less lonely than before. He walked to the viewport and looked out at the darkness. Somewhere out there, beyond the Echo’s grip, Earth waited. Evelyn waited. The threads of Aris’s old life, now carried in him, were still there, thin but unbroken. He placed his hand on the cold glass and whispered, “I’m coming home.” The words felt small in the vast silence, but they were true. And for now, that was enough. 76
