…streaming toward the figure on the plain. “Thank you,” Aris whispered. TheLuckyAlien’s voice came one last time, barely audible. “You were never alone.” The rift swallowed the Stardrift. Darkness closed in. And when the light returned, Aris found himself floating above a plain of infinite white, with the ancient figure standing below, looking up at him with eyes that held the weight of all the cycles. The figure raised a hand, and the sky cracked. Aris gripped the controls, but the ship had no power. He was falling, tumbling toward the plain, toward the figure, toward an answer he was not sure he was ready to hear. The ground rushed up to meet him. 47
