…The key slid into the lock like it belonged there. I turned it. Nothing happened. No click, no grinding. Just the whispers growing louder, forming words I couldn't quite catch. "Leo?" I whispered. The whispers stopped. And then something on the other side of the door started knocking. Three slow raps. Then silence. My hand shook on the key. I pulled it out and ran back to my room, heart hammering. When I looked at the key again, there was fresh dirt on the teeth. Dark, damp soil, like it had been buried. Or like it had come from somewhere underground. The knocking started again, softer now, coming from inside my closet. I didn't sleep that night.
