…She stood up, her legs shaking, and made her way to the side entrance, a smaller, less imposing door that led to the sacristy. She had seen Father O’Malley use it many times. She pushed against it, her small weight leaning into the wood. To her astonishment, it creaked open, just enough for her to slip through. The air inside was blessedly still, a sanctuary from the raging storm. The scent of old incense and beeswax filled her nostrils. She stood in the dim sacristy, the Infant Jesus still clutched tightly to her chest, her heart pounding with a mixture of relief and trepidation. She had done it. She had made it back. Now, she just had to put Him back.
