…When Angela finally crept back into her own cottage, she found her mother dozing in the armchair by the hearth. Aggie, though still pale, was breathing more easily, a faint flush returning to her cheeks. Angela sank onto the rug, exhaustion washing over her. She had done it. She had returned the Infant Jesus, and perhaps, just perhaps, her prayers had been answered. The weight on her shoulders felt lighter, and for the first time in days, a sliver of peace settled in her heart.
