…Adrian leaned back in his chair, the scotch forgotten. The carefully constructed walls he’d built around his morality felt suddenly flimsy, porous. He had inherited not just an empire, but a responsibility. A responsibility to either uphold the corrupt system his uncle had built, or to dismantle it, risking the wrath of every powerful figure whose name was etched in that damning ledger. The path of the monster his city expected, or the path of self-destruction. The choice, stark and terrifying, had just been laid bare before him. The House of Rain had just begun to pour.
