…The executioner pulled the lever. The drop was short, the gravity kind. I felt the snap, the darkness that followed. I awoke to the smell of damp earth and the low murmur of voices. Rough hands were pulling me from the shallow grave I had shared with Melissa. CID, his face etched with a grim determination I’d never seen beneath his drunken haze, was there. “We’re not done yet, boy,” he rasped, his eyes glinting with a newfound fire. “Not by a long shot.” The swill, it seemed, had done its work. It had bought me time. It had bought me a chance. A chance to avenge Melissa. A chance to break the chains. A chance to lead.
