…It was the royal headband. Not the grand, imposing thing he’d imagined, but smaller, more delicate up close. The sapphire winked in the filtered sunlight, a deep, mesmerizing blue. It was undoubtedly the King’s lost treasure. But how? How had it ended up here, in this quiet, forgotten corner of the woods? The mystery lingered, but the immediate task was clear. He carefully picked it up, cradling it in his hands, its cool metal a stark contrast to the warmth of his palms. He had found it. The honest boy had found the King’s lost crown jewel. And as he turned to retrace his steps, a new kind of weight settled upon him – the weight of bringing truth back to the throne.

Leo held the royal headband close against his chest, its gold filigree almost too bright in the dappled woodland light. The world around him seemed to hush, as if the trees themselves understood what he now carried. The air was alive with the hush of wind and distant bird calls, but all Leo could hear was his own heartbeat, loud and insistent in his ears.

The path home unfolded before him, winding back through the thick underbrush. With every careful step, leaves and twigs crackled softly beneath his feet. He dared not grip the headband too tightly, fearing he might mar its delicate metal with the smudges of his work-worn hands. Every so often, he glanced over his shoulder, uneasy at the thought that someone—or something—might emerge from the shadows. But the woods remained silent except for his presence and the gentle rustle of nature.

Halfway back to the edge of the woods, Leo paused beneath a large oak. He glanced down at the headband, turning it over in his hands. The sapphire stone glimmered, deep and unfathomable. His reflection stared back at him in the polished gold—his own wide eyes and tousled hair, a face made older by worry.

A sudden movement in the undergrowth startled him. Leo tensed, clutching the headband protectively. From behind the bramble, a pair of eyes met his own—quick, brown, and curious. It was only a fox, its russet tail flickering as it darted away, but the burst of movement sent adrenaline surging through Leo’s small body. He took a steadying breath, willing his heart to slow.

He emerged at last from the trees, blinking in the harsh sunlight at the village edge. The familiar shapes of thatched roofs and winding paths gave him comfort, but the weight of duty pressed heavier than ever. He could not simply return home. No, the honest thing—the only thing—was to bring the headband to the King. But the path to the palace meant passing through the bustling village square, where Borin and others would surely be watching.

Already, he could hear voices raised in debate. The news of the lost treasure had rippled through the town like a thrown pebble, everyone speculating, some hopeful, some bitter. Leo tucked the headband beneath his tunic, keenly aware of its presence, and started forward.

As he approached the square, whispers followed him. Borin’s hunched figure loomed at the well, and beside him stood Elara, still, her dark shawl drawn tight. Leo’s steps faltered. He caught Elara’s eye—she offered the barest hint of a nod, as if she had been waiting for him. Borin, on the other hand, narrowed his eyes, suspicion burning behind them.

Before Leo could speak, a commotion rose at the far end of the cobblestones. The King himself strode into the square, surrounded by guards and curious villagers. His cloak was deep blue, his bearing regal but not unkind. The crowd parted as he approached, his gaze sweeping over his subjects.

Leo felt a tremor in his hands as the King’s eyes landed upon him. The world seemed to hold its breath. Every step now would matter—every word, every choice. The headband pressed cool and real against his skin, waiting for honesty to give it back to the light.

Just as Leo stepped forward, Borin intercepted him, stern and scowling. “And where have you been, boy?” he demanded, his voice echoing for all to hear. "Out dawdling while the King searches for what’s his?"

The King’s guards turned, watching closely. Elara remained silent, her gaze locked on Leo, her expression unreadable. The square was silent, every villager’s eyes upon him, the moment teetering on a knife’s edge.

Leo drew a breath, feeling the truth on his tongue, the headband burning against his chest. The King himself now just three paces away, waiting for what would come next.
