…Her grandfather’s words echoed in her mind: “Beware of those who seek to exploit the jungle’s bounty.” This Lilly, with her calculating eyes and veiled threats, was exactly the kind of person he had warned her about. The adventure had just taken a sharp, dangerous turn. The treasure, whatever it was, was not the only thing she would have to contend with. The Amazon, it seemed, held more than just natural wonders; it held shadows, too. The serene beauty of the riverbank suddenly felt charged with an unseen tension, and Anya knew, with a certainty that settled deep in her bones, that her journey would be far more perilous than she had ever imagined.

Anya stood at the bow of the Sea Serpent, her fingers splayed against warm, peeling wood. The motor thrummed beneath her boots, echoing the thump of her pulse. Lilly’s skiff had vanished upriver and, with it, any illusion of solitude. The Amazon lay all around—ancient trees looming like sentinels, water dark and deep, insects thrumming in a ceaseless chorus.

A bright macaw screeched from a branch overhead, startling her back to the present. Anya pressed the throttle, guiding the boat forward, letting the current tug her deeper into the green maze. Every swirl of water, every shifting rustle in the brush, felt like a warning. Somewhere, upriver, Lilly hunted. And somewhere beyond that, Anya’s grandfather’s secret—whatever it was—waited to be found.

The map was tucked into her canvas satchel, now heavier with the weight of secrets and threats. She stole a glance, making sure the leather-bound journal remained lashed to the bench. Its edges were creased, flecked with old mud and ink stains—evidence of journeys survived. She remembered her grandfather’s warnings, his voice low as the river at dusk: “Trust no one. The jungle answers to itself, and it keeps its own counsel.”

A log drifted by, half-sunk and slick with moss. Anya maneuvered around it, careful and precise. The sun flickered through the canopy, painting shifting patterns over the deck.

A sudden snap echoed from the tree line. Anya’s breath caught. She killed the engine, letting the boat drift in silence. Something—or someone—was moving behind the screen of vines and fern. She crouched, peering into the green gloom. Was it a caiman sliding into the water? A monkey, startled by her passing? Or had Lilly returned, her camera swapped for something less benign?

The brush parted. A figure emerged—a man, tall and spare, with skin the color of old teak and hair bound back with a strip of faded cloth. He wore a battered satchel much like Anya’s and carried himself with easy confidence. He paused at the water’s edge, scanning the river until his gaze landed on her. For a moment, neither of them moved. The weight of the jungle pressed in.

He raised a hand in cautious greeting, his eyes sharp but not unfriendly. “Lost, or looking for trouble?” he called in accented English, his voice low and calm.

Anya straightened, doing her best to match his composed manner. "Neither," she replied, though her heart pounded with nerves. "Just… following old stories."

A ghost of a smile touched his lips. "Stories can lead to strange places here. Some you’d rather not find."

He didn’t move closer. Instead, he waited, watching Anya with patient curiosity—and perhaps a hint of wary respect. Sunlight glimmered on his satchel’s brass buckle. A bead of sweat trickled down Anya’s neck as she realized the river’s hush had deepened. Somewhere in that quiet, she sensed decision pressing in on her, tangible as the humidity.

A sound drifted upriver: the distant whine of Lilly’s motor, then silence. The man glanced toward the noise, then back at Anya. The moment teetered—trust and danger in equal measure. Shadows stretched across the water. Would she reveal her mission, ask for help, or play her secrets close? The river seemed to hold its breath, waiting for her next move.
