…Leo’s blood ran cold. He ran back to Glimmer, who was playing with the map stone. The light pulsed gently, a soft beacon in the growing dark. “We have to leave,” Leo said. “Tomorrow. First light.” Glimmer looked up at him, trusting and calm. He reached out his hand, and Leo took it. And in that moment, Leo knew that no matter what happened, he would not let anyone take Glimmer away. They would find the Giant Mountains. They would find Glimmer’s family. And maybe, somewhere along the way, Leo would find a place where he belonged, too.
