…"Okay," he said. "We'll prepare." That night, as he lay in the dark between the two women he was starting to love, a sound woke him. A faint hum, like a vibrating string. He opened his eyes and saw it: a crack in the wall above his bed. Not a hairline this time. A fissure, shimmering and hungry. And it was growing. He didn't wake them. He just watched it, chest tight, knowing the peace they'd found was already slipping away. But maybe—just maybe—they could close it before it swallowed everything. The crack pulsed once, twice.
