…Lena shook her head, tears streaming down her face. “You can’t. We just found you. We love you.” He touched her cheek, then Anya’s. “I know. And that’s why I have to. Your love—it’s the key that will keep me from becoming like it. I’ll never be empty again, because you’ll be inside me.” He kissed them both, one last time, tasting salt and sorrow. Then he turned to face the Void-Eater, the key glowing like a star in his hand. “Open,” he said. The door inside him swung wide. And he stepped into the darkness, pulling the Void-Eater with him. The last thing he heard was their screams—his name, torn from their throats, swallowed by the closing door.
