…As he made his decision, a faint, ethereal light began to coalesce in the clearing before him. It shimmered and pulsed, the air around it seeming to warp and bend. It was a manifestation, he realized with a jolt, of the very thing he was contemplating. A gateway. And standing at its edge, a figure began to form, indistinct yet undeniably present, its form shifting like smoke. The Archivist. The guardian. Thorne’s heart pounded, not with fear, but with a dawning, tremulous courage. He looked from the ethereal light to the dark woods behind him, where the sounds of pursuit were growing closer. The cipher had led him to this precipice. Now, he had to choose which way to fall.
