…“Where are we going?” Kelly asked. “To a place where we can finally talk,” Rain replied, his gaze sweeping over us. “A place where you can begin to understand what’s happening, Sarah. And where we can prepare for what’s coming.” He steered the minivan back onto a barely visible trail, deeper into the woods. The shadows seemed to press in closer, but for the first time since the lights went out, I felt a sliver of something other than fear. It was the beginning of a journey, a journey into the unknown, but one I would not be taking alone. And as the minivan crept forward, I couldn't shake the feeling that the darkest part of the night was still ahead of us.
