…“You cannot—” he began, but his voice was drowned by a sudden, terrible roar. The floor beneath them shook, and a crack split the ceiling, spreading like a web. The light from the locket grew brighter, searing, until Mallory had to close her eyes. When she opened them, the Shadow Man was gone, and the room was still. But Desmond lay unmoving on the floor, and from somewhere deep below, a child’s voice cried out in fear. Mallory knelt beside Desmond, pressing her hand to his cheek. “Please,” she whispered. “Please wake up.” He didn’t stir. And in the silence, the locket grew cold again, and the shadows began to gather once more.
