…A new understanding began to dawn on Leo. It was okay for his mom to have friends. It didn’t mean she loved him any less. It just meant that love could be big enough to include other people, too. Just like his love for Sam didn’t make him love Buster any less, or his love for Buster didn’t make him love Sam any less. His mom’s love for his dad didn’t stop her from being a good mom to him. And Mrs. Gable’s friendship with his mom didn’t mean she wasn’t also a friend to him. The world, Leo realized, was a lot bigger and more complicated, and more wonderful, than he had ever imagined. And maybe, just maybe, that was a good thing.
