…As she walked home, her sensible shoes making their usual soft clack-clack on the pavement, Agnes Periwinkle, the meticulous librarian, found herself doing something she rarely did. She was not thinking about the perfectly alphabetized shelves, or the neatly aligned chairs, or even the misplaced bookmark she had found earlier. She was thinking about clues. And culprits. And a very, very large stolen pumpkin. The quiet librarian of Quietville had a mystery on her hands, and for the first time in a long time, her world felt wonderfully, exhilaratingly, out of order.

Rain streaks the library’s broad windows as Agnes returns early the next morning, red umbrella folded beneath her arm, hair still damp from her brisk walk. She unlocks the front door and steps inside, feeling the library’s hush settle over her like a familiar shawl. But beneath that comfort, anticipation quivers. The note—heavy in her cardigan pocket—has transformed everything within these walls, making each shelf and shadow seem alive with the possibility of secrets.

She hangs her coat, tucks her umbrella beside the umbrella stand, and moves through the quiet, methodical with habit. The turn of the key in the office door, the click of the desk lamp, the familiar scent of paper all greet her. But Agnes cannot bring herself to begin the routine of sorting returns just yet. She sits at her desk and places the note in front of her, smoothing it flat. She reads it again, the confession as stark and urgent as it had been last night:

“I took the pumpkin. I’m sorry. I had to—please don’t tell. Look behind the blue door.”

Behind the blue door. Agnes’s mind runs through the library’s layout: every door is brown or glass—except for one, tucked away in the basement, leading to the old archives, painted a faded, hopeful blue. The archives, rarely visited except for the annual audit, are rumored to house ghosts of librarians past (at least according to blustery old Mr. Timmons at the sandwich shop).

She stands, shoving the note back into her pocket, heart thumping with a mixture of fear and excitement. If anyone noticed her just then—her shoulders squared, jaw set with determination—they would barely recognize their reserved librarian.

Before she can talk herself out of it, Agnes fetches the heavy key ring from her drawer and makes her way quietly down the stairs, past the staff lounge and the repair room, to the basement landing. The air grows cooler, and her footsteps echo on the tiles. There it is—the blue door, chipped at the corners, a relic from another era. Her breath is quick, visible in the faint chill, as she fits the key to the lock, fingers trembling.

The door creaks open. The archives loom before her, stacks upon stacks of forgotten ledgers, exhibition posters, yellowing journals from decades past. The only light comes from a small window high up, painting a rectangle of pale morning across the dust. The smell here is earthier, older, and somewhere underneath it all, something sweet—unexpectedly sweet—hangs in the air.

Agnes steps inside, heart in her throat. The blue door clicks shut behind her, leaving her in a hush even deeper than the one upstairs. She scans the room, searching for anything out of place. There, near the back, wedged behind two battered filing cabinets, is a rough burlap sack. She moves closer, careful not to disturb the piles of delicate papers and artifacts.

She grips the edge of the sack and pulls. It’s surprisingly heavy—almost too heavy—and inside she glimpses a flash of orange. Her chest tightens.

Just then, a voice—a low, urgent whisper—cuts through the silence. "Who's there? Why are you down here?"

Agnes freezes. The voice is close, coming from behind the nearest shelf. She clutches the edge of the sack with one hand and the note in the other, the secret of the pumpkin only half-revealed, the mystery swirling tighter around her.
