He turned and saw a black motorcar rounding the corner, its headlamps cutting through the mist like wolf’s eyes. Moreau’s men had found them. “Elara!” he shouted. She glanced back, her face pale in the lamplight. “Run!” They sprinted into the maze of alleys, the motorcar’s engine roaring behind them. The automaton’s heart pulsed faster, as if it, too, felt the chase. And in that moment, Henri knew that the key to its power was not a note or a gear—it was something far more dangerous. It was hope.
