…“I will help you,” he said, “but we must be careful. Moreau’s men will return.” Elara nodded. “I know a safe place. We can work there.” They gathered the automaton and the tools Henri would need. As they slipped out the back door, into the rain-slicked alley, Henri glanced back at his workshop. It had been his sanctuary, his refuge from the world. But the world had found him, and nothing would ever be the same. The rain fell harder now, washing the streets of Paris in a silver sheen. Somewhere in the distance, a clock tower struck the hour. Henri and Elara disappeared into the shadows, the automaton’s heart a beacon in the dark.
