"Because I'm the only one who can read the language of these devices." She touched her chest, where a small clockwork brooch gleamed. "And because I want to stop them before anyone else dies." She turned and walked away, leaving Silas alone in the growing darkness. He pulled the gear from his pocket and read the word again: FORGIVE. Then he looked at the spot where the device had rested, now just an empty patch of floor. Every tick of the clock is a second closer to the truth. He just hoped he'd have enough time to find it.
