…Layia ran to stand beside Ed. Her shield was strapped to her back, and her new sword hung at her hip. She looked small but fierce. "Ready?" Ed asked. "Ready," she said. They turned toward the road that led out of the village, past the fields and into the forest. The sun was high now, warm on their faces. Behind them, the villagers watched in silence. Felix raised his hand in blessing. Catherine waved. Sofia pressed her hand to her heart. And Tracy whispered, "Come home." Ed did not look back. He walked forward, Layia at his side and Jason behind them, toward the Whispering Mountains and the Shadow Vale, toward Seraphina and the truth that waited for them all.
