Felix was ringing the chapel bell. Catherine was opening the inn shutters. And in the square, Layia was already practicing her pivot, her wooden sword cutting the air, her shield catching the sun. She saw Ed and waved, her face bright. “Good morning! I did twenty lunges before breakfast!” Ed walked toward her, his heart full. “That’s my little warrior.” And somewhere, just beyond the edge of hearing, a voice whispered a name he was starting to remember.
