…I walked towards her, my steps still a little unsteady. I didn’t know what the future held. I didn’t know if I could overcome my own demons, or if Jecka’s patience would eventually run out. But I knew one thing. I wasn’t going to numb this moment. Not yet. “I… I think,” I began, my voice raspy, “I think I want to try. To not run.” Jecka’s face broke into a slow, radiant smile. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. And in that moment, surrounded by the sticky floors and questionable karaoke of The Gilded Grotto, I felt a spark of something that might, just might, be the beginning of a best life ever. Or at least, a slightly less terrible one.
