Damon didn’t let go of my hand. “You didn’t have to do that,” he murmured. “You could’ve let them choke. They would’ve understood.” I leaned into him, exhausted. “I don’t want them to understand,” I whispered. “I want them to live.” He kissed my temple, right where my pulse hammered. “Then you’re one of us,” he said. “No more secrets. No more running.” The fire in the clearing had gone cold. But something else had ignited. The pack’s fear hadn’t vanished. But their disbelief had. And Mia, out in the dark, had just lost the war.
