…Lyla nodded. “You have it.” As the pack dispersed to eat, Damon came to stand beside her. “You did well,” he said quietly. “I told the truth,” she replied. “That’s rarer than you think.” He glanced toward the trees. “Sleep tonight. Tomorrow, we talk about what’s chasing you.” Lyla followed his gaze. The forest was dark now, alive with shadows and sound. Somewhere out there, the thing she’d been running from was still looking. But here, in this place, with me these people, she wasn’t running anymore. Not tonight. The air still tasted of pine. But now, it also tasted like possibility.
