…“The Silent One sends a gift,” the figure said, his voice hollow. “A thread of your future, already cut.” He tossed the scroll at Adam’s feet and vanished back into the rift. Adam picked up the scroll. His mark burned. He unrolled it to see a single word written in blood-red ink: “Six.” Below it, a thread of silver and gold—the same color as his own—lay severed. Ally’s hand tightened on his. “He’s showing us he can cut our paths.” Adam looked at the severed thread, then at the mark on his wrist. He felt the weight of the days ahead, but also the warmth of Ally beside him, the lessons of the archangels burning in his blood. He folded the scroll. “Then we’ll weave a stronger one.”
