Then, it snapped back into place, a mask of innocence. But it was too late. I had seen it. The symbol. Jake’s fear. And her cold dismissal. The pieces clicked into place with a sickening thud. The lingering anxiety I’d felt around her, the way she’d steered me away from certain topics, her insistence on the accident… it wasn’t concern. It was control. And the scent of lavender and old paper suddenly felt cloying, suffocating.
