She took a step back, her eyes darting around the room as if searching for an escape route. The silence stretched, thick and suffocating, punctuated only by the faint whir of the laptop fan. The grandfather clock in the hall chimed, each resonant note a death knell for the trust I had placed in her. In that moment, the truth, stark and terrible, settled over me like a shroud. The accident, the whispers of doubt, the careful performance – it all made a horrifying kind of sense. The warmth had always been a lie.
