…I quickly closed it, my movements jerky. “Just… sorting through some things.” She nodded, her smile returning, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Well, don’t overdo it. Come downstairs. I made some cookies.” As I followed her, the weight of the journal pressed down on me, a heavy secret I now carried. Jake’s death wasn’t an accident. It was a murder.
