The streetlights flickered outside Leo’s window, throwing shifting patterns across the living room walls. Emma sat cradled against him on the couch, her knees drawn up, her mind busy. The quiet had a texture—thick, almost suffocating—and every sound from the street below seemed sharper, more ominous, as if the world outside was tuned to their secret.
She shifted, the movement drawing Leo’s gaze. His hand found hers, fingers threading together, the simple intimacy sending a wave of longing through her chest. “Are you hungry?” he asked quietly, as if afraid to break the fragile peace.
Emma shook her head. “Not really.” She forced a smile, but he saw through it. His thumb brushed over her knuckles, grounding her.
“I keep thinking we’ll slip,” she murmured. “That someone will see us leaving together, or recognize my car parked outside.”
He drew her close. “Let them look, then. Let them wonder. We haven’t broken any rules.”
She laughed, brittle. “Don’t say that like it’s true. You know the firm’s policy. No relationships between direct reports. If they put it together…”
Leo’s jaw tightened. “We’ll figure it out. I promise.”
A knock sounded at the door—a sharp, official rap that cut clean through their tension. Emma froze. Leo’s eyes flicked to hers, and in that instant, every nerve in her body went taut. Was it just a neighbor? Had someone seen her come in?
She stood, pulse racing, as Leo crossed the room and peered through the peephole. He turned, silent, and mouthed, ‘It’s Mara.’
Emma’s stomach dropped. Mara was their colleague, and Emma’s friend—but also keen-eyed, suspicious, never one to let oddities slip by her. If Mara saw her here now, everything could unravel. Leo hesitated, his hand hovering over the deadbolt.
The knock came again, insistent this time.
Emma scrambled for her shoes, heart pounding in her ears. There was no time to think, barely time to breathe. She darted into the hallway, searching for a place to hide, when she heard Leo’s voice, calm and controlled, greeting Mara as he opened the door.
Emma pressed herself flat against the wall of the narrow corridor, just out of sight.
“Hey, Mara. What’s up?” Leo sounded casual, but Emma heard the tightness beneath it.
Mara’s voice carried. “I was just in the neighborhood, thought I’d drop off your project notes. I saw Emma’s car outside… she’s here, isn’t she?”
Emma’s breath hitched. The hallway felt too small, the walls too close. She could hear Mara’s footsteps, the soft shuffle as she stepped further in. Any moment now, she’d be discovered. The risk in Leo’s apartment had never felt more real, nor the consequences more terrifying.
Mara’s shadow slid along the wall, and Emma slipped farther back, straining to stay hidden. The decision hung suspended in her mind—how to get out, what to say if caught, what truth to reveal if the lies finally broke. Outside, the city pulsed and whirred, unaware of the crisis unfolding in this tiny, fragile world.
