A figure in white-and-gold robes stepped into the torchlight, hands raised, a crystal orb pulsing at their chest. Behind them, the vanguard of the imperial army crested the ridge, weapons gleaming, banners snapping in the wind. Kaito's power flickered, sputtered, and went dark. His knees buckled. The last thing he saw before the world went black was Hikari reaching for him, her face twisted in terror, and the demon lord laughing—not in triumph, but in bitter, furious recognition. Then nothing.
