…And then he hung up. I stood there, the phone still pressed to my ear, the dial tone a maddening, empty hum. The rain had stopped completely, and a sliver of weak sunlight was trying to break through the clouds. But all I saw was darkness. All I heard was the echo of my own fear, amplified by another broken promise, another reason to retreat. I had wanted him to stay. I had dared, for a brief, glorious moment, to believe he might. And now, faced with a genuine crisis, he had done what everyone else eventually did. He had chosen to leave. The wall, I realized with a sickening lurch, was still very much intact. And I was still standing on the wrong side of it, alone.
