…Hammond’s hand instinctively went to his pulse rifle, the familiar grip a grounding sensation. The fragile alliance forged in moments of shared dread was now under immediate, brutal assault. He could hear it then – the distant, rhythmic THUD… THUD… THUD… of heavy breaching charges against reinforced metal, growing closer, closer. The door to Yitzapo’s sanctuary, their only apparent exit, was under siege.
