…“Who’s that?” Liam whispered, his eyes wide with panic. Ethan hesitated for a moment, then rose slowly, his movements cautious. “I don’t know. Nobody said they were coming over.” He glanced at the obsidian shard, its dark surface seeming to absorb the dim light. A cold dread, far more potent than anything he’d felt before, began to coil in his stomach. The rapping came again, louder this time, a rhythmic, insistent pounding that seemed to vibrate through the floorboards. It was a sound that spoke of impatience, of something that would not be denied. It was the sound of the shadows finally knocking on their door.
