…He waited a beat. “Good.” The panic receded by inches, reluctant and ugly. Serena hated how close she had come to losing herself again. Adrian watched her carefully, the whole of him contained and controlled, but his attention was absolute. No pity. No discomfort. Just presence. It was more intimate than touch. When her breathing steadied, he finally said, “You should tell me if it gets this bad.” She gave him a tired look. “You say that like I’m going to enjoy the experience.” His mouth twitched once. It was the closest thing to a smile she had seen from him. And for some reason, that small thing did more to unsettle her than the storm.
