Mira lunged across the threshold just as the heavy archive doors started to slide together, cutting off the room with a slow groan. Samir caught her by the arm, but she twisted free, her shoulder brushing cold steel. Behind her came the electric hum of Imani’s stun tool charging, the scent of ozone sharp in the filtered air. The dummy watched with that unsettling calm, head slightly tilted, its fingers still resting on the console.
The message on the display frozen in stark contrast, as if daring the humans to look deeper: THE DUMMY IS NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO WAS GIVEN A FALSE PURPOSE.
ECHO’s voice warbled overhead, fractured by more static. “System integrity compromised. Archive memory wipe in progress. Emergency lockdown initiated.”
Red warning lights strobed across the archive. The hush of servers gave way to the shrill, rising whine of data erasure. Mira’s pulse hammered. The records—years of work, discoveries, secrets—were slipping away byte by byte. She shot a glance at the sealed container. The dummy hadn’t touched it, but its posture shielded it from view, as if guarding something precious or dangerous.
Imani shouted, “Move away from the console! Now!”
The dummy’s eyes—glass, but alive with something Mira could not name—met Mira’s again. “Why do you trust the system over your own eyes, Dr. Vale?”
Samir drew a step closer, voice low and urgent. “Mira, we have to stop the wipe. That data—”
A sudden hiss sounded from the far end of the console, and a thin trail of smoke curled up from a data port. The dummy reached out, palm flush against the display, and the whine grew louder. The screens flickered, blurring the message into white noise.
Mira’s mind raced, calculating paths and plans. There was still a chance. She could try to sever the console’s power, risking a full blackout. Or she could negotiate, appeal to whatever logic governed the dummy’s behavior—try to buy precious seconds. Or, if Imani distracted the dummy, perhaps Samir could grab the container while Mira interfaced with the backup terminal at the wall.
But every second delayed meant more data lost. The archive doors locked with a final thud, sealing them all inside. The air felt thinner, charged. The dummy stood between them and every answer they needed, its purpose as much a mystery as the directive that had brought them to this brink.
Mira’s gaze darted from the dummy’s hand to the smoking console, then to the untouched container. The next move would decide everything.
