…“This is her,” he said, his voice firm, though a tremor ran through it. “This is the one.” He waited, his entire being focused on the silence, on the unseen presence that was watching, listening. The seconds stretched into an eternity, each one more agonizing than the last. He felt a bead of sweat trickle down his temple, his body tense, ready for the verdict. Then, a faint click. The sound of a lock disengaging. The blindfold, still firmly in place, felt suddenly looser. A sliver of light, a pale, ethereal glow, peeked through the fabric. The test was over. But the unveiling had only just begun.
