…But as he began to walk home, the weight of his secret desire still heavy on his shoulders, he also felt a flicker of something else – a nascent sense of self-respect. It was a fragile thing, easily crushed, but it was there. He hadn't given in. Not yet. And as he walked, he resolved that he wouldn't. The temptation would surely return, he knew, but for today, he had held firm. He just hoped he could keep holding firm. The thought of disappointing his parents, of betraying their trust, was a far worse prospect than missing out on any trading card, no matter how rare. He knew he had a choice to make, and he was slowly, painstakingly, beginning to understand what that choice truly meant.
