The voice was rough, deeper than he’d expected, a rumble like distant thunder. It was the sound of a stranger, yet it carried the ghost of a familiarity that twisted Javan’s insides. He could only nod, his gaze fixed on the man who held the keys to so many of his unanswered questions, the man who was both a stranger and a phantom limb. Agony, sharp and unexpected, lanced through him. This was it. The moment he had both dreaded and longed for, and it felt like standing on the edge of a cliff, with no idea if he would fall or fly.
