…I blinked, and it was gone. Perhaps it was my imagination, the lingering residue of a world I had barely escaped. Perhaps it was something else, something that would require my attention in the days to come. I opened the door and stepped inside, closing it firmly behind me. Tomorrow, I would begin the work of rebuilding my life. I would find purpose, and meaning, and perhaps even joy. I would carry the scars of my transformation, but I would not let them define me. I was Elara, and I was still human. But I was no longer innocent. And in this city of shadows and secrets, that might be the most dangerous thing of all.
