…The house rose before us, three stories of pale stone and dark iron, its windows glowing with warm light. It was beautiful, and it was wrong, and I could not look away. The carriage stopped. The door opened, seemingly of its own accord. Armand descended first, then offered his hand to Seraphina, then to me. I took it, and this time his fingers closed around mine with a pressure that was almost possessive. "Welcome to our home, Elara Moreau," he said. "Welcome to the world that exists between the gaslights." I stepped across the threshold, and the door closed behind me with a sound like the closing of a tomb. The night had only just begun.

A chill slid down Elara’s spine as the great doors whispered shut, silencing the city and its distant, restless music. Inside, there was a hush, the air perfumed with something dark and sweet: orange blossom, old paper, the faintest trace of smoke. The entrance hall unfurled before her, all marble floors and columns draped in shadow, with lanterns set high in gilded sconces. The hush wasn’t emptiness, but expectation.

Seraphina glided past Elara, skirts whispering. Her hand trailed over the polished banister, and for a heartbeat Elara thought she saw a shimmer—like moonlight rippling on water—at the Countess’s touch. Armand paused, his presence filling the doorway, and watched Elara as if she were a melody he knew by heart but could not quite recall.

“Come,” he said, voice velvet-soft. “It is better to see than to hear. The house is old, but it remembers every step.”

Elara followed, her shoes silent on the cool stone, every sense sharpened. Portraits loomed on the walls: men and women with eyes too knowing, mouths too still, their gilded frames wreathed in dustless ivy. The house pulsed with a secret kind of life that seemed to breathe just out of reach.

They passed through a gallery of mirrors, each one catching and bending the light. Elara caught sight of herself—pale, uncertain, her hair a wild dark sweep against her borrowed cloak. Seraphina’s reflection lingered near, her gaze unreadable. Armand’s face was a shadow among shadows, all angles and longing.

At last, they reached a door at the end of the hall. Armand opened it with a twist of his wrist, revealing a salon bathed in golden candlelight. The room was hushed luxury: velvet settees, marble hearth, books stacked in careless towers. The fire burned low, its light dancing on crystal and silver.

Seraphina sank onto a chaise, her posture perfect, her eyes never leaving Elara. Armand, instead, crossed to a sideboard and poured a deep red liquid into a delicate glass—wine, perhaps, though the scent held notes of spice and something strangely metallic. He handed the glass to Elara. His fingers brushed hers, sending an electric shiver up her arm.

“To the night,” he murmured. “And to its mysteries.”

Elara hesitated, the glass trembling slightly in her grasp. Her heart thudded—a warning, a question. Seraphina’s smile curved, languid as a cat’s. The fire crackled. For an instant, Armand’s eyes seemed to glow with impossible color as he waited for her to drink.

A bell chimed somewhere deep in the house, sharp and sudden. Seraphina turned her head, her lips parting as if to speak. Armand’s hand tensed on Elara’s, possessive and urgent. In the silence that followed, footsteps echoed in the distant corridor—measured, deliberate, approaching.

Elara’s breath caught. She stood between the Count and Countess, wine glass poised, uncertainty tightening around her ribs. In that moment, she sensed the balance of the world shifting, the air thick with the promise of revelation and danger.

The salon doors creaked, and a figure appeared in the threshold, cast in silhouette by the hall’s wavering light. He paused, as if savoring the scene inside; then he stepped forward, and his eyes found Elara—hungry, ancient, and knowing.

The room seemed to hold its breath, the fragile peace shivering on the edge of something new.
