…He didn’t know if he could win. He didn’t know if he even wanted to. But for the first time in days, perhaps weeks, the thought of fighting, of trying, flickered in his mind. He closed his eyes, the image of the child’s face etched behind his eyelids. He took a deep, shaky breath. The journey ahead was a terrifying unknown, a climb out of a pit of his own making. But as he sat there, in the desolate sanctuary of Room 143, with the Colt 1911 resting in his hand, Stephen Elrod felt a faint, almost imperceptible stirring of something that might, just might, be hope. The two bullets remained, a silent testament to the precipice, but for now, the choice was his.
