…I touched the worn leather pouch around my neck, the one containing the smooth, grey stone my grandmother had given me. It was cold to the touch, unyielding. But she had said the sword would unlock my magic. She had said I could control it. And I had to believe her. Even as doubt gnawed at me, even as the shadows of Valerius’s machinations grew longer, I would keep searching.
