…“Let them come,” I spat, a spark of my usual fire igniting in my eyes. “They want my power? They’ll get more than they bargained for.” The Weaver merely watched, their form a silhouette against the encroaching chaos. “Indeed, little Queen. They will.” And then, the shimmering walls of the nexus shattered, replaced by the distorted, menacing forms of the Shadow Syndicate, their obsidian skin gleaming, their luminous eyes burning with a terrifying hunger. The battle for my return, and perhaps for my very existence, had just begun.

The world fractured around Nova, her battered senses assaulted by the howl of the Shadow Syndicate’s entry. Shards of golden light tumbled away, swallowed by a darkness so thick it seemed to muffle sound. The mat collapsed beneath her, vanishing into the void, and she caught her balance only by sheer will, bracing herself against the sudden vertigo. Every muscle in her body screamed, but she rose—she had to.

The Syndicate’s figures emerged from the smoke and splinters, obsidian bodies curving with an unnatural grace. They moved as one, their eyes unnaturally bright, gazes locked upon her as if they could drink her very soul. Behind her, the Weaver hung motionless in the air, strands of energy webbing their silhouette—watchful, but offering no immediate salvation.

Nova’s heart hammered, a wild staccato, feeding a corona of energy that prickled along her skin. She could feel her power surfacing, the force that had always come with emotion—her fear and anger swirling into something volatile. The Syndicate advanced, gliding soundlessly across the ruined ground, hands outstretched; their hunger palpable, as if they meant to consume her very essence.

She flexed her fingers, calling the energy to her palms. It came eagerly, answering the fury and terror in her chest. Golden light shimmered, coalescing into a sphere large enough to blind. Her thoughts raced. Could she fight them all, here, alone? The Weaver’s words echoed, barely a whisper over the maelstrom: “Mastery and acceptance.”

The closest Syndicate agent lunged, arms stretching into shadowy talons. Nova twisted aside, the golden sphere arcing past, slicing through the gloom and sending the creature sprawling, shrieking as its form flickered out of focus. But more came—three, six, a dozen, their numbers swelling as the room twisted impossibly, folding in on itself like a nightmare.

Nova leapt backward, stumbling as the ground buckled beneath her. The air around her rippled with energy, wild and barely controlled. She remembered each dimension she’d glimpsed in her journey—a world of glass, a city made of song, shadows clutching at her heels. This place bent to her emotion. For a terrible heartbeat, she wondered what would happen if she let her power truly run wild.

But then she caught the Weaver’s gaze, unwavering in the storm. For all their alien inscrutability, there was an urging there—silent, but clear. Don’t just lash out. Choose. Control. Survive.

The Syndicate pressed in, an obsidian tide. Nova’s fury surged, threatening to burn her alive from the inside, but she forced herself to breathe—a slow, ragged inhale. The energy in her palms steadied, resolving into tight, controlled focus. She could feel the threads of possibility, a thousand futures poised on the edge of her will.

Suddenly, the largest of the Syndicate—the one whose eyes glowed blue, not gold—spoke with a voice like splintered glass. “Come quietly, Queen. There will be no pain.”

Nova raised her hands, golden energy blazing between her fingers. The words tasted like ash. “You’ll have to go through me.”

The Syndicate surged forward in a single, coordinated assault. Behind them, a thin seam of light appeared in the ruined wall—an escape, perhaps, or another trick of the dimension’s will. Nova’s heart pounded.

She had to act now, before the darkness closed in.
