…Lyse had already stopped thinking about him. She turned back to the pond, where a few last drops were still falling from the old hedge. "Mother," she said, "can I try again?" It was the first time anyone in the house of Dellsora understood what kind of child they had. She was talented, and she knew it. She was arrogant, though quietly, because she had never been given any reason not to be. But she was also something else, something harder to describe. She was curious in the way that sharp things are sharp. She could not leave a question alone. That was what made her dangerous. It was also what would one day make her vulnerable.
