…On Mia's wedding day, as she stood at the altar, ready to start a new chapter of her life, Lily couldn't help but feel emotional. She remembered all those years ago, holding her tiny daughter in her arms and promising to always be there for her. And she knew that no matter what, she would continue to be there for her daughter, from every conversation to every bad dream.

Mia’s hand found Lily’s as the ceremony began, squeezing with a tremor just before she let go to take her place at the altar. The music soared, sunlight trickled through stained glass, and Lily’s heart hammered with the bittersweet ache of letting go. Rows of family and friends filled the pews, faces blurred by emotion and the golden haze of memory. Mia’s veil shimmered, a soft cloud framing her nervous smile, and for a moment Lily saw her daughter at every age—sticky with jam, sobbing over scraped knees, caring for lost kittens, laughing under summer rain.

As the vows began, Lily sat straighter, willing her composure to hold. Jack, Mia’s soon-to-be husband, looked at her daughter as if he were seeing sunrise for the first time. The words spoken at the altar—about love enduring, about choosing each other every day—made Lily’s own vows from decades ago echo in her mind, the promises made and remade through years of joy and hardship. A lump rose in her throat.

All around, the church was hushed, save for the steady cadence of the officiant’s voice. The air smelled of lilac and beeswax, of hope and nostalgia in equal measure. Lily thought of the tiny shoes lined by the door, bedtime stories whispered in the dark, the many times Mia had clung to her hand in uncertainty—and now, for the first time, was letting go for someone else.

The ceremony ended in an eruption of applause. Mia and Jack turned to face the congregation, married and radiant. Lily’s hands trembled as she clapped along, tears slipping unchecked down her cheeks. She locked eyes with Mia, who smiled and mouthed, “I love you.”

The reception hall, a swirl of laughter, music, and clinking glasses, welcomed them next. Lily surveyed the tables decorated with peonies, the dance floor gleaming, the cake perched on its pedestal. She moved through the crowd, exchanging hugs and congratulations. When she found Mia for a quiet moment by the window, the young woman reached for her, and they stood together, gazing out at the rolling green lawns.

Mia’s eyes glistened, her voice soft. “You always said love means showing up. I wouldn’t be here without you, Mom.”

Lily’s chest tightened with pride, and a bittersweet warmth. The room behind them thrummed with celebration, but here by the glass, it was just mother and daughter in a bubble of stillness, past and future colliding.

Suddenly, from across the room, Jack’s mother beckoned Mia to join the cutting of the cake. Mia hesitated, glancing at Lily as if asking for silent reassurance—one last moment, before she plunged fully into her new life.
