…Lily was a single mother, but she poured her heart and soul into raising Mia, making sure she never felt the void of a father's love. Mia was the light of her mother's life, and Lily's love for her knew no bounds. As Mia grew older, Lily made sure to always be there for her, through every conversation and every bad dream.

The sun filters through the thin curtains of their small, sunlit apartment, painting pale gold stripes across the floor. The kettle whistles softly on the stove. Lily stands at the counter, stirring oatmeal with slow, careful circles, the sleeves of her faded robe pushed to her elbows. Mia’s laughter spills from the living room, bright and untamed, as she stacks colored blocks into a tottering tower that teeters on the edge of collapse.

Lily glances at her daughter, caught by the sight—her chest tightens with that familiar blend of tenderness and worry. Lately, Mia has been quieter at school, her gaze wandering to the window during breakfast, questions lingering unsaid in the corners of her eyes. Lily wonders if it’s loneliness. Or just the growing pains of childhood.

She sets two bowls on the table. “Breakfast, sweetheart,” she calls. Mia bounds over, her hair an untamed halo, cheeks flushed with early morning excitement. She clambers into her chair, wriggling, and grins up at Lily with oatmeal already on her chin.

“Did you have any dreams?” Lily asks, smoothing Mia’s hair.

Mia nods solemnly, spoon in hand. “I dreamed we went to the lake. There were ducks, and you let me swim in my socks.” She giggles at the memory, and Lily laughs too, even as she makes a mental note: take Mia somewhere soon, somewhere open and green, a break from the daily routine.

The clock ticks. There’s a chill in the air—the kind that warns of rain. Today is Thursday, which means storytime at the library and a shift at the bakery for Lily. She glances at her phone, the screen lighting up with a reminder for rent due next week. A flicker of anxiety passes through her, but she tucks it away, focusing on Mia’s little voice as she chatters about her dream.

Mia looks up, suddenly serious. “Will you come to the library with me today?” she asks. “Sometimes the other moms stay.”

Lily feels the familiar pinch in her heart. She wants to say yes, to give Mia everything, to linger in every moment, but she knows the bakery needs her, and the rent won’t wait. The decision hangs between them, delicate as spun sugar, waiting to tip.
